On my last trip to Weber and Trings, I was told about their takeaway drams policy. It is such a brilliant idea. Its great to be able to have a browse and then take away a small dram that can be sampled at your own leisure and for less than it would have cost in a bar. It means that you get to try something new and can make up your mind before buying a bottle of your own.
I noticed a whisky on the board from France and having never had a French dram, I was super keen to try it. From doing a little reading online, this whisky is a double distilled Barley spirit. It is then aged for eight years in Sauternes barrels. The distillery is in Obernai, near Strasbourg. Sadly, it isn’t available in the UK, but you can visit the distillery!
Aroma: Raisins, vanilla, muscovado sugar and plum jam.
Flavour: The very beginning of this whisky is slight, very mellow, very sweet and has a distinct flavour of marshmallow.
As the middle flavour emerges, it is strongly alcoholic, has a darkening flavour and dry’s the tongue. There are notes of toasted cereals, of nutty caramel and of wood. There are also notes of raisins and plum reappears on tongue.
The flavour passes to the back of the mouth, warming and gently spiced. Here there are pastry notes, there are notes of almonds, vanillas and the fruit of pineapple. These flavours are sweet and short.
Mouthfeel: Sweet, light and short.
Overall: This is a very interesting whisky, its sweet, darker than you would expect and has lots of subtle and different flavour components. It carries the Sauternes in its butteryness, but it doesn’t have the salty mouth feel of other whiskies matured in similar casks.
