anCnoc is the name given to whisky that is produced at Knockdhu Distillery in Knock, Banffshire. It was opened in 1894 and produced whisky for the Distillers Company. In its most recent incarnation it has been producing whisky since 1989, but the liquid produced was re-named for clarity in 1994, after the Gaelic name meaning ‘the hill’.
I got hold of this dram to try, as I had read lots about anCnoc, its rebranding and also about the quality of its spirit. As it was a whisky that was low on stocks, I figured that now was the time to try it. I got hold of a dram from Masters of Malt
Price: £50-£60
Appearance: Champagne Gold.
Aroma: A huge waft of vanilla, followed by fruity, apple notes. There is also a dry, wooden undercurrent.
Taste: This golden liquid opens with slight peppery notes, which mingle with very slight sweetness. The sweetness is very light, almost perfumed.
As a middle flavour there is vanilla and sweetness. As this sweetness passes away, so peppery spice builds. However this spice never reaches a deafening climax, it only ever becomes a symphony. As this music builds it unveils a deep fruity note, which is wide, deep and sits in the middle of the tongue.
The final part of this liquid overture, occurs when the fruit and wood rise to the top of the palate, where they cling, warm, majestic and fruitful. There is a distinct leathery note here also, which feels like a pair of well worn, familiar sandals. Comforting, Classy, yet ultimately relaxing.
Mouthfeel: Balanced, Subtle, yet full flavoured.
Overall: This whisky felt like opening a door ajar. It was an interesting and pleasant whisky, with lots of differing flavour notes. Sadly, with only a dram to try it felt like turning the key, witnessing the glint of golden light through the door and then someone slamming it in our face. We want to try more!
Real Dram Factor: 7.6
