This dram was one of the bottles that my parents picked up when they visited the distillery. They were very impressed by tour, the guide and all the generosity for the drams that were on offer. When the came back they very kindly brought me a bottle and let me try their drams. This one I took home in a little dram bottle to try later. I have waited for a while, but today is the day!
Glenturret is a distillery in Crieff, which is in Perthshire. This Highland distillery is hidden in a glen, which has high sided hills on either side. Apparently the distillery is sited on the location of an bothy that was used to distill illicit spirits during the times when taxes were high and people sought to avoid paying them! This fact affords the distillery the tag of the “Oldest Distillery in Scotland” It is currently owned by Highland Distillers who produce Famous Grouse.
The Glenturret 10 is an entry level single malt, which is apparently used as the heart of the Famous Grouse blend.
Price: £30 – 40
Appearance: Golden, like barley growing in a sun filled field.
Aroma: Golden cereals, lemon sharpness and hazelnuts.
Taste: The start of this dram is sweet, creamy and nutty. There is a milky quality, which is sweet and pulls me into the world of chocolates. It draws me back to my childhood and to the sacred opening of the box of the poshest chocolates I could imagine, the Ferrero Rocher! It is so mellow and easy to drink.
The middle of this dram is spicy, which draws out the oak from the bottle. It is wooden, earthy and warming. The spice builds and moves towards the top of the mouth and spreads across the palate.
The final notes are all about the wood. They are creamy, vanilla and light, brown sugar.
Mouthfeel: Sweet, Spicy and Creamy
Overall: Being reminded of Christmas treats is absolutely never a bad thing. Although this whisky could never be described as a full flavoured or powerful whisky, it is pleasing and very easy to drink. I think it would function as a great introductory single malt for any whisky drinker who would normally drink cheap blends. It is very well priced and could be a good gift.
