My love for Mackmyra started in late 2014 when I purchased a bottle of Midnattssol and Midvinter as a Christmas treat, solely on the bottle design. I was hooked, the flavours were something i’d never experienced before in a whisky. The Midvinter was the epitome of Christmas in a bottle, while the Midnattssol was an intensely fruity and floral beast. These were both part of the Mackmyra “Seasons” editions but with them being limited edition they are unfortunately no longer available. Although as Seasons suggests, new bottles are released on a regular (some might say seasonal) basis.
Blomstertid (Flower Time) is the latest seasonal addition. As soon as I heard this was being released, I had to get my hands on a bottle. Around a third of the casks used had been aged in cherry wine casks, giving it it’s lovely red colour and in typical Mackmyra style this is bottled at 46.1% ABV.
Cost: £50-60
Appearance: Dark deep gold with a warm red glow.
Aroma: Oak undertones, with fruit, berries and citrus.
Taste: Sweetness covers the tongue, the cherry wine casks have had a big influence. Big fruity notes with Raisins and Berries prominent throughout. There’s also a light spice on the tip of the tongue. Fairly long finish with lovely subtle vanilla notes.
Mouthfeel: Thick, smooth and fruity.
Overall: A very typical Mackmyra whisky, but unless you’ve tried Mackmyra before this will be something completely different for your tastebuds. At around £55 a bottle you are paying extra for the limited edition status as well as the beautiful bottle (which looks great empty with these USB lights) and design, but behind all of that lies a fruity whisky packing a punch.
