As we’ve already gathered from my Mackmyra Blomstertid review, i’m easily influenced by beautiful bottle designs. Scallywag from Douglas Laing falls into this category. I had previously sampled and enjoyed this at the Bristol Whisky Festival in May, as a result I decided to purchased a bottle to take for a week long stay in the Forest of Dean.
Scallywag is a small batch bottling from Douglas Laing. It boasts Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes amongst it’s malts which make up this Speyside Blend.
Cost: £35-40
Appearance: Rich golden sunset glow.
Aroma: Lovely sweet aroma, huge waft of salted caramel with an underlying light spice. Over time there are hints of vanilla, orange rind and milk bottle sweets.
Taste: Sweet brown sugar and fruit initial hit, follow by a light spice on the front of the tongue, more orange rind before developing into the lovely rich dark chocolate and vanilla flavour. Oak and dry sherry finish.
Mouthfeel: Smooth and oily, with a light spice.
Overall: Sitting outside in the middle of the Forest of Dean is the great setting for drinking whisky. Scallywag proved to be the perfect accompaniment to this idyllic setting and as such has joined the select few whiskies on my “Definitely Buy Again” list. Probably one of my favourite sub £40 drams.
