Price: £80-90

Appearance: Very light, like cut grass that has dried and sorched in the sun.

Aroma: This started like warmed currants and sultanas, like those hiding quietly in a toasted tea cake, covered in salty butter. With time this flavour morphs into a light, fruity red wine.

Taste: The start of this dram is sweet and plumy, like an oloroso sherry.

Then there is a developing aniseed and ginger spice, which is fiery, warming and sweet. Like the most perfect brandy snaps.

The final notes of this whisky are drying and tannic, like a spicy, dry red wine, such as a Pinotage.

Mouthfeel: Cask Strength, but not noticeably so. Still very drinkable.

Overall: This dram is a heady 51.6% ABV and comes directly from the cask. One of my favourite experiences this year was getting to try cask strength Bunnahabhain at the distillery, so anything that recreates that for me is a winner in my book. This is another great single cask treat from Claxton’s.

Real Dram Factor: 8.0
