This was the second of the mystery drams that I tried on Christmas day. Another unusual one, that had a hint of bourbon, but never quite the same punch or enthusiasm of the big American bourbons we have tried before. After tasting, debating and reviewing, I did some research. Turns out that this is blend of two whiskies, a high rye bourbon and small amount of Colorado single malt whiskey.
Price: £30 – 40
Appearance: Light, golden and flecked.
Aroma: Has a strong peppermint aroma that has a pine forest edge to it.
Taste: Intially sweet, with the mint from the nose. There is a subtle sweetness.
A light black pepper spice that builds and opens out with more drinking. Their is a roundness, a robustness and a quietness to this flavour.
This spice stays around, but only quietly in the background. Here the minty freshness.
Mouthfeel: Everything this malt does is quiet, calm and understated, almost to the point of failing.
Overall: This was another interesting dram, its minty aroma lurking within the whole of the dram. It was lighty spicy, with some woodeness and back spice. I don’t think that this will be a dram for Bourbon lovers, but it might make an interesting budget dram for newer whisky drinkers.
