Tamdhu Distillery is a Scottish distillery, located in Knockando, Banffshire. It was opened in 1896 and remained in production, save for two periods of dormancy or closure. The dormancy period was between 1927 and 1947 and the brief closure between 2010 and 2013. Close to the River Spey, the distillery takes its water from the nearby Knockando burn.

This is a limited edition Tamdhu which is a 10-year-old single malt from 100% first fill sherry casks. Limited to 1000 bottles, each is individually numbered with a certificate of authenticity.

Tamdhu 10 Year Old Limited Edition

Price: £120 – 130

ABV: 46%

Appearance: Dark, golden orangey red, like an aged whisky marmalade.

Aroma: Dark rich oak, sweet stone fruits and malty chocolate.

Taste:  On first sip, this dram imparted sweetness of tinned fruit, some thing like apricots mixed with the depth of stewed apples. This is sweet, but its also very lightly spiced.

As the dram develops, it drops back in time, to a musty leathery flavour, that reminds me of antique luggage. Here the spice becomes bigger, but never that it overcomes or overpowers the sweet sherry fruitiness.

Finally there is a sharpness of citrus, and a spicy, warming flavour  like cinnamon. This is followed by vanilla and toffee sweetness, which lingers swirls and treats

Mouthfeel:

Overall: This dram is a grower, one of those drams that at first you are unimpressed by, but then it slowly opens, delivering different flavours in each different sip.

Real Dram Factor: 7.8
