Lakes Distillery – Whiskymaker’s Reserve No.2

Aroma: The Lakes Distillery Whiskymaker’s Reserve No.2 is a different beast to No.1. It is still fruity on the nose, but there is red wine acidity and sweet sherry fruit competing to come to the fore. There is also a sweet minty spiciness, which really rears its head in the background too.

Taste: This whisky is initially sweet with boozy sherried dried fruit – think all the constituent parts of a really great Christmas cake, but in liquid form and jam packed with golden brown sugar sweetness.

Then it slowly becomes a gingery spice, which warms the insides of your lips and descends backwards warming the throat. This part of the dram is still treacly sweet, but there is also a woody dryness too.

The finish is long, warming and creamy. As the dram dies away there is a lingering coppery mintiness, which sits and lasts.

Appearance: Like liquid soft brown sugar.

Real Dram Factor: The palate of this whisky is full of really lovely fruity, spicy flavours. It is both dark, thick and warming, but also fruity and light at the same time. You can taste the ABV in the spiciness, but it isn’t overpowering and I really enjoyed the darker, thicker flavour notes. This whisky is a huge success in my opinion and for that, I would award it an 8.3 out of 10.
