Aroma: Initially a huge whack of raisin and apple fruity sweetness. Underneath this is a musty, tobacco leaf greenness and a cinnamon spiciness that is rich and somehow nutty.
These aromas combine with a subtle charcoal smoke to remind me of fruitcake eaten from a leather bag that has contained a tobacco pipe.
Taste: On first sip there is a delicate honey sweetness, that mingles with a charcoal led smoke and quickly becomes a mix of cinnamon spice and ginger heat.
As you go back to the whisky, that first flavour is more butter toffee and the middle flavour shows more of the orchard fruit of the nose.
Finally, there is a minty quality that plays a role in the end of the dram. It somehow brings a vibrant freshness, that contrasts the leathery spice at the end.
Appearance: A very delicate golden honey colour.
Real Dram Factor: This is subtly smoky whisky. Its fruity sweetness, seems almost to smuggle the smokiness on to the palate, which means that each sip reveals extra flavour notes and extra dynamism. For example, there is a chocolatey hazelnuts quality that I only discovered after the whisky had been in the glass for a while. The leathery, billowing smoke of the finish is a real delight and makes your experience enjoyable for that little bit longer. A really interesting and enjoyable dram.
