Picking a favourite whisky from a festival is always a very tough job, especially when you are selective and only choosing to drink drams that interest you in the first place. Which means that this whisky has done very well to earn its place in my heart. I hadn’t really come across Nickolls and Perks before the English Whisky Festival and certainly didn’t know that they had their own bottlings, but having sampled the two at their table this time (and a secret under the table dram), I will be keeping a close eye on them from now.
Aroma: The first sign that this was good dram was the nose. It really held my attention, but I couldn’t quite find the words at first. However, as the dram warmed in my hand, I discovered notes of marzipan; of red berries; sweet, yet acidic; toasted nuts; and then wafting smoke from an open fire.
Taste: The palate starts super sweet and creamy, like demerara sugar caramelised on Panna Cotta or Creme Caramel. This gives way to a fruity, almost orange zest like quality than quickly bursts with the heat of a cinnamon or chilli like heat. This lasts for a long time, but as it dies down the smoke is noticeable in the background, alongside the creamy notes of earlier in the dram.
Real Dram Factor: I loved this whisky. It showcases the best of White Peak (a fantastic distillery with a great core range) with the character that single cask independent bottlings bring out – 9.2
