Cask strength whisky is an experience not to be feared, but to be embraced. The bigger ABV means you need to exercise caution, but no other type of liquid gives you a better read on the type of whisky that a distillery can produce, even if their core range doesn’t show it.
Aroma: This is a big salty, smoky, meaty whisky. It reminds me of the smell of a butchers being recreated in a museum: dusty, sweet and smoky.
Taste: This whisky briefly starts sweet, with a big whack of brown sugar sweetness.
Quickly, it becomes full of sweet charcoal smoke. BBQ pork sizzling over maple wood covered coals, sweet, herbal and yet smokey. The middle is acrid, fiery and full of chimney smoke.
The final notes echo this with big, billowing smoke, but there is also a sweet lemon sherbet fizz that is acidic and powdery sweet.
Real Dram Factor: Big, bold and almost too much: it is a whisky that lives on the edge and I am here for it – 7.9
You will like this if: You love low and slow BBQ.
